Women’s Rights

Women’s Rights

For America’s women, securing the right to vote was a long, hard-fought struggle. Their peaceful protests were met with jail time, ridicule and social exile. In jail, they were often tortured, beaten, and forced to live in inhumane conditions. But their efforts were not in vain.  It is an unfortunate reality that Democrats must continue to be vigilant in the protections of the rights of women in America today.  The Broward Democratic Party has a proud history of supporting women’s rights and women to leadership positions in business, society and government.  The issues important to women are inherent in the Democratic Party’s principles whether it be access to healthcare, civil rights, education, or the economy. The Democratic Women in Broward County, Florida are the very core of  the Broward Democratic Party, which is dedicated to fighting for the rights of women and advocating their positions in the development of public policy.

  • Reproductive Rights

A woman’s ability to control decisions about her reproductive life are at the core of our Nation’s belief in the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Restrictions on a women’s access to healthcare or infringements upon their power to make healthcare and reproductive decisions  must be strongly opposed by all Democrats. The extreme agenda and persistent attacks of many conservatives have demonstrated the are dedicated to stripping women of rights affirmed by the Supreme Court 40 years ago.

  • Healthcare

Not only must we defend the rights of women to control their own healthcare decisions, but also defend the progress we have made in providing access to affordable healthcare for women.   The passage of  of the Affordable Care Act gives comprehensive, affordable family planning and reproductive health care to more than a million women in Florida.  By 2014, approximately 3 million Florida women may be covered.

  • Education

Education provides women with freedom, prosperity, health & safety. Democrats support Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Title IX provides equality in sports and academics through equal opportunities and protections in the pursuit of education. Democrats also understand that early childhood education is vital to providing opportunities for the prosperity of women and the development of their children.

  • Violence

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—greater than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. Democrats support the reauthorization of the successful Violence Against Women Act. Broward Democrats support President Obama’s gun control plan, and the reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.
