Immigration

With the exception of Native Americans indigenous to the United States of America we are a Nation comprised of immigrants. Every generation of immigrants has endured hardships and discrimination in their quest for the American Dream, and those who make their way to our Country today suffer similar adversities. It is no surprise that our Country is a beacon for those seeking a better life. Many who make the journey do so legally overcoming enormous obstacles, some cross our borders without proper documentation, or overstay their permitted travel, and others are unknowing participants in breaking U.S. immigration laws.

Our Country has been sending mixed signals to foreigners coming to the U.S. for decades. We pride ourselves for our propensity to provide shelter for those who are persecuted or in need, yet many other Americans discriminate against ethnic groups labeling them illegal aliens who are not part of the real fabric of our nation. Many companies continue to illegally employ undocumented immigrants for cheap labor.  The reality is that the immigration issue in America is a very complex problem that will not be solved by erecting barriers, or spreading contemptuous rancor. America is at a crossroads in relation to our identity when it comes to immigration and we must look in the mirror and determine how we want history to portray our generation and how we want to shape our future.

As in most things in life, there must be a balance. We cannot turn our backs on undocumented children who been raised their entire lives in this Country at no fault of their own. We cannot deport men and women who serve in our armed forces. Yet we must enforce legal immigration and travel to the States to protect our Nation from foreign threats and dangerous commerce. As Democrats we support common sense immigration reform devoid of the divisive acrimony prevalent in our national discourse.

Broward Democrats Support the Following Comprehensive Immigration Reform Measures:

  • Strengthening Our Borders
  • Streamlining Legal Immigration
  • Employer Accountability
  • Providing Pathway to Earned Citizenship for Undocumented Immigrants
  • Support of the Dream Act
